Primary Purpose of the Position

To plan and deliver effective Spanish language instruction that supports students’ linguistic, cultural, and academic development, while fostering their social and emotional growth. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues, engage with families, and contribute to the school community to promote a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicate and liaise regularly with fellow Spanish and World Language team members regarding planning, assessment, parent communication, curriculum development, and classroom issues such as behavior and student engagement;
  • Collaborate with other school colleagues to support students’ social, emotional, and academic growth;
  • Take an active role in classroom management and positive behavioral support;
  • Attend and contribute constructively to department and staff meetings;
  • Supervise students during breaks or transitions, as assigned;
  • Coordinate and lead class activities, language-learning projects, or cultural experiences as needed;
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, lesson planning, assessment, reporting, and parent communication;
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with families to keep them informed of student progress and classroom expectations;
  • Participate in and support school-wide events, language fairs, international celebrations, and other community activities.

Certifications and Education

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Education, or a related field.
  • Valid teaching certification/license
  • IB training and certification.

Desired:

  • Master’s degree in Language or related discipline.

Experience

Required:

  • Experience teaching Spanish at the high school level;
  • Professional experience teaching IB Language A: Language & Literature or Literature, with a strong understanding of DP standards, assessment criteria, and internal/external moderation processes.

Desired:

  • Experience teaching in international or multicultural contexts.
  • Experience supporting students with diverse learning profiles in rigorous academic settings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • Extensive familiarity with the literature, culture, and academic conventions of the Spanish-speaking world, grounded in lived experience;
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners;
  • Understanding of inquiry;
  • Understanding of Competencies based learning;
  • Experience with moderation of assessments in a collaborative setting.

Desired:

  • Strong understanding of IB philosophy, assessment criteria, and standards
  • Familiarity with international curricula beyond IB (e.g., AP, A-Levels).

Overview
Graded is a private, co-educational, non-sectarian, non-profit American day school serving an international community of approximately 1315 students, ages 3-18. The school follows an American curriculum with instruction in English and is accredited in the United States through AdvancED and in Brazil by the Ministry of Education. The school has three divisions:

Lower School, K3 to Grade 5
Middle School, Grades 6-8
High School, Grades 9-12

The Lower School consists of the Montessori Pre-primary School (K3-K5) and the Elementary School (Grades 1-5). The High School program is college preparatory, and all graduates receive an American High School Diploma. Seventy-five percent of students earn an International Baccalaureate Diploma. A Brazilian High School Diploma is also offered, and 49% of graduating seniors receive all three.
